Heat Pump Rebates in BC: What Nanaimo Homeowners Can Claim
Nanaimo Heat Pumps installs the heat pumps that qualify for BC's provincial rebate programs, and we tell you which one your home falls under. If you're replacing electric heating you can claim up to $4,000 through the CleanBC Home Renovation Rebate, which has no income test, or up to $13,000 through the CleanBC Energy Savings Program for a ground-oriented home at income Level 1 or 2. Both programs require a CleanBC Better Homes registered contractor. Replacing a heat pump you already have doesn't qualify under either CleanBC program.

Two provincial programs offer heat pump rebates in Nanaimo, and the rules differ between them. The Home Renovation Rebate Program is open to every homeowner regardless of income. The CleanBC Energy Savings Program is income-qualified, and it is the only program that currently funds switching away from fossil-fuel heating.
A rebate is money the utility or the province pays you back after we've put the heat pump in.
Rebate-eligible work must be done by a registered contractor as part of heat pump installation.
Home Renovation Rebate Program: no income test
The Home Renovation Rebate Program is co-delivered by BC Hydro and FortisBC and applies no income test, which makes it the program most Nanaimo households qualify for. Replacing electric baseboards with a heat pump pays up to $4,000.
A Nanaimo household converting from natural gas, propane or oil must use the income-qualified program below.
CleanBC Energy Savings Program: income-qualified
The Energy Savings Program is the income-qualified stream. It pays up to $13,000 for a ground-oriented home heated with electricity, at income Levels 1 and 2. Income Level 3 applies only to households switching from gas, propane or oil heating.

Income Level 3 of the Energy Savings Program covers switches from gas, propane and oil. Amounts are as published in August 2026.
Replacing an existing heat pump is not eligible
Both programs pay you for changing heating fuel or for getting off electric baseboards. Adding a head or a second heat pump to a system that already runs on a heat pump does not qualify.
Replacing electric baseboards
If you're taking out baseboards, you get the Home Renovation Rebate whatever you earn. At income Level 1 or 2 you get the bigger Energy Savings Program amount instead.
Income thresholds that set the level
Your level depends on what the household earns before tax and how many of you live there. Those are the top figures for each level. A four-person household is at Level 1 under $94,900, Level 2 under $118,600 and Level 3 under $189,800.

Local rebates in the Nanaimo area
The Regional District of Nanaimo pays a $2,000 rebate for switching from oil, propane or gas heating, in its electoral areas. The rebate does not apply inside the City of Nanaimo or Lantzville. We confirm eligibility for your address before any work is booked. The fossil-fuel system must be fully removed, and replacing equipment that has already broken down is not eligible. Applications run from January 1 to December 14.
Eligibility: contractor, paperwork and equipment
If you install it yourself, or buy the equipment yourself, neither program pays out.
Under the Home Renovation Rebate Program the rebate application has to go in within six months. We help you submit the rebate paperwork, and we give you written documentation for every job we do on your home.
The equipment must appear on CleanBC's qualifying products list.

Installation by a registered contractor — installation by a registered contractor, with permits pulled as part of the job.

Paperwork and payout — we help you submit the rebate paperwork to the Home Renovation Rebate Program, and the application has to be in within six months.
